Positive vibes everyone. Wondering what Sacramento's dynamic Mother/Daughter poetry/writing/publishing duo has been up to lately? We've been busy!

We are very happy and proud to announce that Straight Out Scribes is celebrating 30 years of being a Mother/Daughter poetry team this year (1990-2020). We were planning to celebrate big time but well, you know, the pandemic. Before the pandemic we were scheduled to feature at a number of programs and events which were cancelled but it wasn't long before we were invited to feature at the various ZOOM events: (Just so you know, we dress in our beautiful African Cultural Attire and give our audience the same high energy as we would if we were actually there in person)

Wanda Sabir's "Wanda's Picks" Radio Program which originates in the Bay Area interviewed us via phone March 25, 2020 @ 9 a.m. We shared our poetry and discussed our newest Afro-futuristic Anthology, "Caledonia's Daughters".

Derrell Roberts, Roberts Family Development Center featured us for their Wednesday school-age children's program via ZOOM on July 16, 2020 @ 9 a.m. (So much fun!) RFDC does great learning programs for children and families)

WOSE' Community Church featured us as part of their 35th Anniversary Program, via ZOOM July 19, 2020 @ 11:30 a.m. (This was an awesome program with numerous presentations.)

We were featured presenters for Lisa Daniels' "Sisters Mentally Mobilized", "Sac Youth Works, Sacramento", and "Pro Youth and Families" youth employment training program focusing on mental health and COVID-19 via ZOOM on August 18, 2020 @ 10:30 a.m.

Staajabu has been creating Afro-centric brooches, cosmic jewelry, crocheting, quilting and sewing. She is working on a seven-story sequel anthology to "Caledonia's Daughters".

On the Sept. 12 program which started at 7 p.m. hosted by the Brickhouse with poet AnnaMarie as the MC, we were featured poets for the fundraiser for Sacramento poet, engineer, Q fraternity member and family man Sean King as he continues his recover from a stroke pre-Covid shutdown. We were able to participate via FaceBook Live.

Dr. Chochezi has been teaching online classes via Zoom as a full-time professor and has recently added to her responsibilities the title of "Faculty Equity Coordinator". Since assuming that position in June she has coordinated two open mic readings for the campus, district and region via ZOOM - "Courageous Healing in Traumatic Times" and "Reimagining Safety in a Culture of Violence" which were attended by 40-50 people each time expressing their thoughts and feelings through poetry, essay, stories or song.
